Nowadays, most people are aiming towards good health and balanced body. Some people are also taking care of their emotional health, but only few are seeking spiritual balance as well.
Ayurveda supposes these 3 aspects equally important. According to Charaka in order to maintain your life balanced one should follow these 4 principles:
Dharma – Righteousness. To live a religious life taking into consideration what is good and what is bad, what is right and what is wrong and follow the good as well as righteous path as dictated by the rules of religion. And I want to mention here that a path doesn’t have to be religious it can be just simple rules of morality, it can be Yogic path or simple performance of rightful duty.
Artha – Wealth. People sometimes believe that the path of spiritual growth and pursuit of material wealth are mutually exclusive, however that is not true. We don’t have to be greedy, think only about money or get attached to material possessions. That’s not Artha. Artha is being abundant with what you realistically need to feel secure and comfortable. Think about the Universe. It is abandoned with everything it needs, so similarly people should have everything they need. Otherwise how could anyone attain spirituality if the only concern is how to buy food or pay rent?
Kama – Desires. Fulfillment of all desires in various forms like desire to be wealthy and powerful, sexual needs, or a desire for recognition. Suppression of desires altogether is not recommended because it is like a fully coiled spring that is held down by force. These suppressed desires can erupt, sometimes unpredictably, causing detrimental consequences. We came here for happy life and we have full right to fulfill our desires. However, it is important that while acquiring wealth and fulfilling one’s desires one should not deviate from the righteous path or Dharma.
Moksha – Liberation. Attaining a state of eternal happiness and getting rid of cycles of life and death, which is ultimate goal of all the philosophers. The mission is to help people realize their True Selves. For each to become one with their Supreme Self, to achieve Moksha, in this lifetime.
And for everything mentioned above we need health.
